Wilmore Kentucky

You know you're in Wilmore when:
- No one locks their doors
- A local is regularly seen driving his horse and buggy on afternoon errands
- People actually pay money for the terrible coffee at the only coffee shop in town
- The entire town celebrates Christmas together at the local UM church (the entire town fits into the local UM church!)
- The mayor actually wears a tux complete with tails at town gatherings (sorry, no top hat)
- The grocery store sells out of bread and milk every time the weatherman predicts snow flurries
- You see a black person at the grocery store and assume he's a new international student
- The biggest news in months is that the corner gas station now carries barbecue wings
- The corner gas station is called "Cluckers"
- The only thing open on Sunday is Cluckers
What about you? Can you come up with a distinctive for the city/town in which you live?

Yes, it would have something to do with Mercedes Benz or popularity contests or the list of people who hate Walmart. :)
Subway is making some serious profit these days! Solomon's Porch - a deli across the street - stays pretty busy too.
You know you're in Holland, Michigan when you see job postings for the Reformed Church in the secular newspaper.
Hmm... ok, here's some... you know you're in the QCA when, well... you know what QCA means. Also,
* you know what it means when you say you either live above or below the hill.
* People would rather drive farther on the SAME side of the river than cross the bridge to do the same thing, actually CLOSER than their chosen destination just so they don't have to go to "the other side".
* Fights break out when contending on directions if they involved "23rd ave" \ "avenue of the cities".
* You know what "Augie" and "The Dirty Bird" are.
* People's countenance changes from excitement when I tell them I bought a house to trepidation and fear when I tell them "it's on 11th street".
So here's my shout for the place I'm currently calling home.
Jenn,
Ha! Having spent my share of time in the QCA - may I add a few?
You know you're in the Quad Cities:
* when going to the chiro is like going to the grocery store
* when everyone qualifies as a pizza snob ("Papa Johns isn't good enough for me!")
* when South Park does not necessarily mean an animated hit show on comedy central.
a few more shout outs about knowing when you are in the quad cities:
::Whitey's is and ice cream place and not a racial term
::the Mississippi is "the river"
::you will stand in line for 25 minutes and pay $110 for "isabel bloom" aka "sculpted concrete"
::if in a traffic jam in iowa [and you are from illinois] and the phrase "stupid iowan" pops out of your mouth [or just the opposite]
::distance is in minutes, not miles
::the 74 beltway is "the interstate"
::you know what 4 cities actually are in the quad cities
::you know what "taco pizza" is
::you can pronounce the city of "Milan" correctly
::you have to dial long distance to call someone within sight across the river, but dial a local number for someone twenty minutes away
i guess the real question is, "why am i still here?"
Ha! I love all the QC talk. Especially since there are so many people who read this blog that can add to the list :).
The pizza is phenomenal at Simm's. But it's the chocolate malt shakes straight out of the massive metal cup that are really worth mentioning!
I also live in Wilmore (my husband goes to the seminary and works at the college) and I absolutely love your list. It is so true! As for Solomon's Porch, order the chai tea; it is good.
1. No one locks their doors
Nice urban legend, but I imagine a poll would reveal otherwise.
2. A local is regularly seen driving his horse and buggy on afternoon errands
Actually JA makes $$ hiring out his horse and carriage (cf. Broadway in Lex on a Fri night) so it really is just a bit of advertising. . . .
3. People actually pay money for the terrible coffee at the only coffee shop in town
Surely you aren't referring to SP?
4. The entire town celebrates Christmas together at the local UM church (the entire town fits into the local UM church!)
Hmm . . .let's see, the Old Fashioned Christmas celebration draws crowds from the surrounding counties for the free food and the musical entertainment at each business. The UM singalong is one small part at the end of a whole day of celebration that includes seminary and community craft fairs. . . oh yeah, and JA gives free carriage rides. . . .
5. The mayor actually wears a tux complete with tails at town gatherings (sorry, no top hat)
I've never seen this, sorry. Mayor Rainwater is partial to equestrian attire, however.
6. The grocery store sells out of bread and milk every time the weatherman predicts snow flurries
Which kind of makes me think that KY is a bit of southernish, although it is also midwesternish.
7. You see a black person at the grocery store and assume he's a new international student
This may says a bit more about your social circle than it does about Wilmore.
8. The biggest news in months is that the corner gas station now carries barbecue wings
Because the two Asbury college students who walked to Lexington to protest slavery in Sudan is so yesterday's news.
9. The corner gas station is called "Cluckers"
Formerly The Corner Market, formerly Pa's.
10. The only thing open on Sunday is Cluckers
Well, and Subway. And the "Y".
