Community

It is interesting how words can lose their power if they get used too much. Maybe that accounts for some of God's reasoning behind the third commandment. Postmodern, Emerging, Extreme (preferrably spelled Xtreme) - they've lost their punch. The word 'community' is on the fast track toward joining the ranks of light-weight words. Dietrich Bonhoeffer siad, "He who loves community, destroys community; he who loves the brethren builds community."

Can you think of a word that has lost some of it's punch? Is it due to overuse or something else?

You read my mind. The other phrase that has lost it's punch for me, that means something similar to community, is "let's BE the church." (verses GOING to church). It's a true statement, but often overused.

Marcia,
Paradigm is an interesting example too. It seems like no one has a satisfying definition for these overused words too. What, exactly, does paradigm mean? Emergent? Community?

sometimes i wonder if "relevant" is starting to be interchangable with "trendy".
